Ponteland sits minutes up the A696 from our base at Killingworth, and its roofs are unlike anywhere else in the North East: broad, hipped, and often very large indeed. Darras Hall dominates the picture: an estate laid out on plots of a scale rarely seen elsewhere in the region, carrying everything from mid-century bungalows to substantial modern executive homes. The roofs are correspondingly big — long hips, wide eaves, extensive guttering runs — and many now carry the extensions, dormers and orangeries that decades of remodelling have added. A roof of that size punishes shortcuts and rewards proper setting-out.

The older village around the River Pont tells a quieter story: stone cottages and farmhouse stock under slate, with traditional lead details, alongside solid post-war detached homes on the roads towards the airport.
