Any village that keeps Seaton Delaval Hall on its doorstep understands what a fine roofline is worth. The village wears its history in layers. The former colliery rows along and off the Avenue are the oldest working stock — solid terraces whose roofs have been re-covered once or twice already, where the detail that matters is what previous generations left underneath: tired timbers, cement verges and chimneys that need honest repointing rather than a smear of mortar.

Around them sit the post-war semis and bungalows that fill Seaton Delaval and Holywell, mostly under concrete tile now reaching the end of its serviceable life, and the newer estates that have grown along the A190. Down at Seaton Sluice, the coast writes its own rules: salt-laden wind corrodes fixings, lifts ridge tiles and strips verges, and a roof there is only as good as the care taken over its fixings.

We will not borrow a review the village has not yet written. What we can show is density on every side: fourteen reviewed jobs in Whitley Bay, from a full re-roof of a 1930s semi to storm-damage repairs; seven in Cramlington, including a large conservatory roof replacement the owner called absolutely amazing; four in Blyth, among them lead flashing renewed on a porch and a cement verge repair the customer said left the house looking much smarter. Seaton Delaval sits in the middle of that map, ten minutes from our Killingworth yard, and we pass through it most weeks.

Here the weather sets the agenda. Ridge and verge security matters more than cosmetics when the wind comes off the sea at the Sluice, so we fix mechanically where the roof suits it and check flashings while the scaffold is up. On the colliery rows the work is re-roofing done properly over sound timber, chimney repointing and hand-dressed leadwork; on the post-war semis it is concrete-tile renewal, bay and porch flat roofs in EPDM or GRP, and replacement fascias, soffits and guttering as the original timber gives out. We also fit Velux and other roof windows, replace conservatory roofs, and handle solar panel remove-and-refit around a re-roof ourselves.
