Ryton is one of the more pleasant surprises of the west Tyne — an old village that kept its green, its trees and its dignity while the conurbation grew around it — and it is a place where Willow Roofing can point to work already done rather than promises. Our owner has led the firm from the tools for more than twenty-three years, and he still attends every survey, writes every quote and runs every job himself, whatever its size.

Old Ryton is a conservation area, and it looks the part: stone-built houses and cottages gathered around the village green and the lanes near Holy Cross church, many under slate, with the chimneys, lead details and lime mortar that reward a careful hand and punish a careless one. Mature trees shade many of these roofs, which keeps them handsome and keeps them mossy in equal measure.

Beyond the old village, Ryton and its neighbours Crawcrook and Greenside are largely twentieth-century — interwar and post-war semis and bungalows, plus newer estates — mostly under concrete tiles now well into middle age. Cement-finished gullies, verges and ridges are common on this generation of housing, and after fifty Tyne valley winters it is usually the cement, rather than the tile beneath it, that gives way first.

Our Ryton record is specific and checkable. On a detached bungalow we re-cemented the roof gullies, cleared thirty years of moss from the tiles and did several extra pointing jobs at no additional cost — the owner called it a cracking job and highly recommends us. Ryton's roofs ask for two different disciplines. Around the green and the conservation area, it is traditional work: slate repairs, chimney repointing, leadwork and gutter detailing on stone buildings, using materials that match what is there. On the twentieth-century stock in Ryton, Crawcrook and Greenside, it is the maintenance that keeps a concrete-tiled roof alive — re-cementing gullies, verges and ridges, clearing moss before it dams the gutters, renewing fascias and soffits, and repairing or replacing Velux windows. When a roof is genuinely finished, we will say so plainly and quote for a proper re-roof.
