Wylam has a fair claim to being the Tyne Valley's most sought-after village: George Stephenson's birthplace, a working station on the Newcastle line, and a riverside setting that keeps its stone terraces and Victorian villas in steady demand. Houses here are looked after, and their roofs should be too. We have worked in the village and been reviewed for it, which matters more than anything we could say about ourselves. We price plainly and in writing, send photographs as the work proceeds, and leave a garden and street as we found them. The village core is stone: terraces and cottages along Main Road and the lanes above it, and the Victorian villas that came with the railway, most under pitched slate with the chimneys, valleys and lead details that period roofs depend on. Slate here should be matched in kind — reclaimed where the roof calls for it — and lead dressed by hand, so that a repair disappears into a roofline the whole street shares.

Around the old village sit twentieth-century additions: interwar and post-war houses and modern infill under concrete tile, along with the kitchen extensions and garden-room additions whose smaller pitched and flat roofs do a great deal of quiet work. Wylam's riverside position earns it real weather off the Tyne, and rooflines here are tested every winter.

On the stone terraces and villas the work is slate repairs and re-slating, chimney repointing and hand-dressed leadwork — the trades that keep a period roofline honest. On the later housing it is tile repairs and re-roofing, ridge and verge work, and replacement fascias, soffits and guttering as original timber rooflines give out. Kitchen and extension roofs — like the one we repaired here in 2023 — are a village staple, as are flat roofs renewed properly in EPDM or GRP.
